Introducing Monmouthshire's New STEM Initiative
Monmouthshire County Council has recently unveiled an ambitious STEM Programme, designed to foster local talent and enhance education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Supported by the Welsh Government, this initiative aims to bridge the gap between businesses and schools, enriching students' learning experiences in these crucial fields. The programme will not only promote STEM subjects but also explore the possibility of establishing an apprenticeship center in the area, thus providing robust pathways for students after they complete their education.
Showcase Event Ignites Enthusiasm
The launch event on June 2, 2025, at King Henry VIII 3-19 School in Abergavenny was a resounding success. Students, educators, and local businesses gathered to celebrate STEM achievements, including the demonstrated capabilities of the 'Cheddar Chariot', a Goblin G2 car race project led by Goytre Fawr Primary School. Chris Fall, the Design Lead from Peter Jones ILG, highlighted the importance of STEM skills, urging students to pursue these subjects to meet the demands of future careers in local industries.
Building Strong Partnerships for Future Success
This project thrives on collaboration; Monmouthshire County Council is working hand-in-hand with the Welsh Government, The Education Achievement Service, Coleg Gwent, and local enterprises. The resources being rolled out will cover a range of STEM disciplines, including coding and 3D printing, complemented by a robust network connecting schools and businesses.
Empowering Future Generations with Essential Skills
As emphasized by Cllr Laura Wright, Monmouthshire's Cabinet Member for Education, this initiative is not solely about academic performance; it’s about equipping young learners with the skills necessary for the modern workforce. With the goal of increasing student engagement with STEM subjects at Key Stages 4 and 5, the programme aims to expand the range of qualifications offered and introduce students to potential career pathways.
Get Involved and Support Local Talent
The STEM Programme is set to begin rolling out resources during the summer term, ensuring that by the next academic year, students will receive comprehensive support. Local businesses interested in collaborating are encouraged to reach out to the Business Monmouthshire team.
The future of Monmouthshire's youth depends on the strength and readiness of its educational programs. With this STEM initiative paving the way, we ask our local business community to get involved and help inspire the next generation.
