Monmouthshire's Commitment to Ethical Choices
The vibrant community of Monmouthshire is set to celebrate its biggest-ever Fairtrade coffee morning, running from September 22 to October 5, coinciding with Fairtrade Fortnight. This initiative, supported by the Monmouthshire County Council alongside local Fairtrade Town groups, aims to elevate awareness about the role of ethical consumerism in fostering a better environment and supporting farmers around the globe.
Why Fairtrade Coffee Matters
Cllr. Catrin Maby, the county's cabinet member for climate and environment, highlighted the urgent message behind this year's event. While many are aware of the economic benefits Fairtrade brings to producers, the environmental implications are often overlooked. By choosing Fairtrade coffee, consumers contribute to sustainable farming practices that help preserve tropical forests from deforestation, an issue exacerbated by conventional coffee production.
Engaging Schools and Communities
In an effort to engage younger generations, participating schools will have access to an interactive lesson from the charity Size of Wales. This educational resource seeks to connect students with the larger global narrative of coffee production and its impact on tropical rainforests. Schools are also incentivized with the chance to win a Fairtrade chocolate brownie-making workshop or a visit from a Ugandan coffee farmer, who will share personal insights about the benefits of Fairtrade practices.
Call to Action for Community Participation
Community groups and schools throughout Monmouthshire are encouraged to register and participate in this monumental event. Engaging in this coffee morning is not merely about sipping coffee; it’s an opportunity to foster a deeper understanding of how consumer choices can make a difference. Join in and make a standout impact!
