Monmouthshire County Council is making waves in local environmental efforts, recently achieving recognition as a Bronze Carbon Literate Organisation. This marks a significant achievement in the council’s commitment towards reducing carbon emissions and actively working towards a zero-carbon future.
Understanding Carbon Literacy and Its Importance
Carbon literacy is about understanding the carbon footprint of everyday activities. By increasing awareness across the community, Monmouthshire aims to empower individuals and organizations alike to take action against climate change. Cllr Catrin Maby emphasized, "Becoming a zero-carbon county is at the heart of our purpose," making it clear that education is essential in addressing the climate and nature emergencies we face today.
In-House Training: A Step Forward
Through engaging with carbon literacy training programs involving public sector partners, Monmouthshire has now taken the vital step of providing this training in-house. Approximately 115 individuals, including officers and community members, have already completed the program, learning vital climate change concepts and making pledges to reduce their carbon footprint—both individually and collectively.
