Grace Harris Sets Ambitious Goals for Upcoming Racing Season
Amidst a challenging day at Sandown, trainer Grace Harris remains optimistic as she gears up for the last four months of the racing year. Located in Shirenewton, 133 miles from the Sandown racecourse, Harris sent three runners to compete in the afternoon's meeting, showcasing her commitment to the sport.
Recent Performance: Resilience in the Face of Adversity
Although Exclamation delivered a commendable close second in the nursery race, Savannah Smiles and Nakaaha faced setbacks, finishing in seventh and last place respectively. Despite these discouraging results, Harris's spirits remain high as she reflects on a successful season thus far, having celebrated 14 flat race winners and four over jumps this year. "I think our best is 22, so if we can get to 25, I’ll be happy," she stated, demonstrating her ambitious nature.
Shifting Strategies: The Evolution of Harris Racing
Harris admits to a strategic pivot in her approach to racing, with her focus now primarily on flat racing, shifting from a 50-50 mix with jumps to a 75-25 ratio. "It's easier to buy flat horses and sell them, while you can run them a lot more," she explains, illustrating her adaptability to market conditions and the dynamics of horse racing.
Aiming High: Navigating the Racing Landscape
In a sport where success often hinges on fine margins, Harris is keenly aware of the handicapping challenges her horses face. Notably, Nakaaha's recent rise from a rating of 67 to 80 after a win raises concerns about her future competitiveness. Nonetheless, Harris remains hopeful that her remaining horses will continue to perform well without being overstretched by newfound ratings. "Hopefully some of the others aren’t and can keep going," she expressed.
The Road Ahead: Ambition and Anticipation
As Grace Harris looks toward the future, her ambition is palpable. With a strategic approach and a cadre of capable horses, she is poised to make strides in the racing world. The coming months will be crucial as she aims to maximize her training efforts and navigate the competitive landscape ahead.
