Capturing the Heart of Karioi in Film
A new feature documentary entitled Tirohia Karioi – Behold Karioi is set to premiere this weekend, shining a spotlight on the unique spirit of Karioi through the stories and experiences of its community members. The film is the result of a collaboration by the Toitū Whāingaroa team, who carefully documented the connections of over 17 individuals from the region, including local farmers, artists, and hapū representatives.
The Importance of Community Narratives
The film showcases the histories and personal connections locals have forged with Karioi, encouraging viewers to explore the mountain's multifaceted nature. Lisa Thomson, a lead member of the documentary team, expressed her hope that audiences will experience profound moments of understanding while watching. “We want to help people grow their knowledge of Karioi and nurture their reverence for it,” she noted.
Engaging with Māori Cultural Perspectives
In an acknowledgement of the cultural depth surrounding Karioi, the team has embraced Māori narratives and perspectives in their storytelling approach. “It is vital to acknowledge both the similarities and the differences in our worldviews,” added Lara Sweetman, highlighting the theme of kotahitanga—unity—in their work. This community-focused initiative aligns closely with current dialogues about cultural inclusivity and respect for indigenous knowledge.
The premiere will be held on September 6, followed by community screenings on September 7, where entry is by koha. This film event not only marks a milestone for local storytelling but also cultivates a greater connection between the community and their land.
As we equip ourselves with the knowledge of our cultural heritage, let's gather together to appreciate the narratives that shape our local identity. Join the community in viewing this enlightening piece that echoes the heart and soul of Karioi.
